It is used in the management of fractures, dislocations, and prolonged muscle spasms affecting the arms, legs, neck, spine, or pelvis. Traction can help maintain proper alignment, prevent deformities, or assist in correcting existing abnormalities.
In this method, traction is used to gently pull the two ends of the fractured bone into a straight and properly aligned position, which helps relieve muscle spasms and reduce pain. As the muscles relax, the pressure exerted on the ends of the bone is also reduced.
Traction is divided into two types: skeletal traction and skin traction. The choice of each method depends on the location and nature of the disorder.
Skeletal traction involves inserting a pin into the fractured bone and applying traction using specialized traction equipment and weights. The traction force gradually pulls the fractured bone in the desired direction, helping restore and maintain the bone in its correct anatomical position.
This method is an effective technique for treating fractures of the femur, tibia, humerus, and cervical vertebrae, as the traction force is applied directly to the bone.
